Been trying to remember the last time I ate “formal” sushi.
Various forms of sushi are so ingrained in the culture here that I eat something sushi-like everyday.
fresh ahi sashimi (several times a week at least)
poke of various types (several times a week at least)
musubi of various types (several times a week at least)
And if there is pot-luck somewhere, then all kinds of homemade sushi rolls.
Now trying to find a good Cuban sandwhich… that has become a challenge since I moved here. (my wife’s are awesome)
My motto, “Sushi - It’s What’s For Dinner.” (Mondays & Wednesdays included)
That place would go over well here with that slogan. The old joke goes:
First person “The food here is terrible!”
Second Person “And the portions are small, too!”
There’s two places in my town that are great; Tomo Sushi, and Fujiyama. Fujiyama is expensive, but really good. Tomo is somewhat cheaper, and have a good selection.
I really love good quality sushi but my wife is not a fan so it’s a rare occurance for me to induldge into some sushi. We have a place here called Hibatchi and they have some great rolls.
Which reminds me that I need to place a take out order soon because it’s been a while since I’ve had their specialties.
our favorite place closed down. there are a couple over-priced places in casinos that are decent and there are a couple in ocean springs that are a bit of a chore with a 9 month old in tow, so we are suffering without sushi at the moment. we are probably making the trek over to chef scott’s in ocean springs. one good thing about it, carry in your own beer, which is huge for mississippi.
We had a sushi restaurant here that did not yet have its liquor license and welcomed guests to bring their own beer. It made it a whole lot more fun to plan the meal. Instead of relying on the usual sushi place favorites, like Sapporo, you could bring a witbier or a Belgian Golden Strong and see what matches up well. It was nice while it lasted.
It seems sushi places are popping up all over the place and imo it shows in the variable quality. Maybe I’m just really finicky about sushi but a lot of the places around me aren’t that good. It’s not really ‘bad’ per se but just not right. They also now have a sushi section in many grocery stores but that doesn’t really work for me either. For me a roll has to be made fresh, with ingredients of varying temerature (for one, the rice cannot be cold). The grocery store stuff is made and then refrigerated which kind of ruins the texture for me.
As much as I love beer, I prefer sake with sushi. But if you haven’t tried Hitochino Nest Red Rice Ale with sushi, give it a try. It’s a ‘different’ beer for sure.
