so if i wanted to convert this weeks RotW to extract with grains or mini mash, how would i go about it? also can someone explain the ‘first wort’ hop addition?
That’s a pretty good questions. I don’t think any of those grains can be steeped so you would have to go with a mini mash
replace the pilsner malt with about 6.4 lb of pilsner LME or about 5 lb of pilsner DME, replace all the 6 row except 1 lb with about 4.5 lb pale LME or 3.6 lb pale dme.
mash the rest of the grains as indicated.
you could get close with extract but it would require a bit of wheat extract ~.75 LME or .6 DME, a bit of munich extract (this wouldn’t be exactly the same cause that’s not pure munich) and leave out the biscuit and victory.
First wort hops go in when the wort is being drained into the brew kettle and allowed to steep during thre sparge, then boil.
I tried a FWH on an extract batch the other day. I can’t really draw any conclusions as it was a one time quicky batch for the yeast but I put the hops in while the water was coming up to temp and just left it there for the whole boil.
so if i wanted to do FWH on an extract with grains batch (which is where i’m at now), would i just throw in my hops with my steeping grains?
and thanks for the recipe tips!
Yes, if you steep with the grains in a bag. Remove the bag and rinse, then put the hops and liquid into the main boil kettle.
