Birthday present!

Pretty excited to start using this!

Happy Birthday. When can we expect a review?

Probably next week some time. Need to get my yeast ready. Might do a hefeweizen first. Probably throw in some rice hulls to be safe.

And I don’t have any 5-6 gallon fermenters lol

Got a couple empty cornies to split the 6 gallons into?

And happy birthday!

Thanks y’all! I just ordered a 6.5 gallon big mouth bubbler so I’m all in. I have everything else (pH meter, refractometer, temp control) should be good to go!

Don’t look now but there are a cpl horses eyeballing your new toy.

Happy Birthday!

Ha! They were my present two years ago!

There’s a guy down the hill with a cpl Danes. They are majestic creatures.

I haven’t brewed with it yet but I tested it today. Starting with cold water (14C) and 30L it took about 2 hours to come up to 168 (dough in temp) and then about 40 minutes to come to a boil from that temp. You can set it so that the water is at dough in temp when you wake up in the morning or get home from work so that’s a big time saver. I also plan to only usually do between 20 and 25L batches so I expect boil time to be a lot faster. I hope to brew with it one day next week!

Is that a 110V element?  If so, the time to boil isn’t half bad, and the time to heat up is worth the wait not to have to put in a dedicated 220V circuit or brew on top of your electric clothes dryer.  Any guess at ramp times for a step mash?

Yep 110V. I felt pretty pleased about the boil time too. Not sure on step mash times but I plan on doing some testing soon and I will report back.

The time spent rising from 168 to 212 can also over lap with sparging.  So, it doesn’t feel like 40 minutes.

Plus there’s always something to clean, measure, prep, etc. Time flies.

Edit: For a comparison I tracked heating times on a recent brewday;

Strike from room temp: 8.5 gal (~32 liters) from 68.3F (~20 C) to 155F (~68 C) took 45 min using my induction cooktop @ 3500w.

Boil from mash out: 7.5 gal (~28 liters) from 155F (~68 C) to boiling in 22 min using my induction cooktop @ 3500w.  I could have begun to heat as I transferred but I waited until I had the full boil volume.

I power it at 3500w to heat the strike water then again in the boil (~28 liters) until the hot break, then I power down to 2kw to maintain a gentle boil.

Thanks Dwayne!
