Black is Beautiful - Adjuncts

With many breweries and homebrewers making this “collaboration” beer, some area going straight to making it as is and others are making it with something special or different. Anyone planning on or have made this with any adjuncts? I am trying to think about which direction I want to go with it.

The recipe includes oats, flaked barley and roasted barley, all of which are adjuncts.  If I were to brew this recipe I would include them all and not add any additional adjuncts except sugar if I missed my gravity.

Some folks in our group are using cocoa nibs.

I think that’s a good addition… maybe pull off a gallon and add some coconut [emoji1786]

Meant additional adjuncts. Apologies for my word choice.

I had the opposite thought. I think there are too many ingredients in this one. I would streamline the recipe considerably. Maybe something like this:

12 lbs pale malt
1 lb chocolate rye or chocolate malt
1 lb flaked barley or oats
12 oz C120
12 oz roasted barley (UK)
1 lb corn sugar

I’d maybe change the yeast to 1450, Joystick or BRY-97 (in that order). And I don’t know what the 20 min hops are really doing for this beer. I might swap out the 2 oz of cascades at 20 mins for 1 oz FWH. Then again, I don’t really want to brew this beer at all because it is 100 degrees outside.

Here’s another take:

Black Is Beautiful IPA

14 lbs pale malt
1 lb Midnight Wheat late/non-mash addition
8 oz chocolate rye late/non-mash addition
8 oz C120
1 lb corn sugar

1 oz Cascade 5.5AA FWH
1 oz CTZ 15.5AA 60
2 oz Cascade 5.5AA 10
2 oz Cascade 5.5 AA 0
1 oz Citra 12AA 0
2 oz Cascade 5.5AA dry
1 oz Citra 12AA dry

black grains matter!

Never mind. Not worth the trip into the gutter.

All the best.

Thank you.
