Bottle conditioning with wyeast 1332

First time i used this yeast, made a rye IPA with rhubarb.

Every other time I have bottle conditioned, there was a bit of yeast left in the bottle that I had to carefully pour the bottle and leave the last 1/4 inch or so to avoid pouring yeast into my glass. However with this one, I noticed that the yeast has formed a tight packed layer on the bottom of the bottle, and does not come loose when pouring the beer. it comes out easily when rinsed with a bit of agitation, but stays in the bottle when poured normally.

Is this something that happens with higher floculating yeast strains?

It’s not higher flocculating yeasts specifically, you find different behavior in both powdery and flocculent strains, but yeasts do pack down (or not) differently.  Some even show (or don’t) a tendency to be attracted to glass, and adhere to the sides of the bottle!  Commercial breweries regularly filter out the yeast that they ferment with and bottle with one that packs down hard.  It’s nice to find one you like for flavor that also behaves itself when you pour!

Sweet. thanks - yeah, this yeast works perfectly with this beer and I plan on brewing it again, its nice to not have to leave that last 1/4 inch in the bottle haha
