Welcome to the forum! I brew in the garage so I just get to look out at the rain mostly. However, if I were brewing in the rain tonight I’d be worried about getting washed away.
I’ll take rain or snow over wind any day. I have a pop up shelter I can put up to block rain. No matter what I do to block wind, it always tried to blow the flame out.
To battle the wind I made 2 rings out of 10" aluminum flashing. One fits over my turkey cooker and has a cutout for the burner air/fuel intake. The other is about 3’ in diameter and sits on the ground around the cooker. It allows enough air in for a good flame but stops the wind gusts from blowing out the burner.
Seriously though - the wind (esp. cold wind) sucks. Changes my evaporation rate dramatically unless I keep an eye on the flame. I may have to try your aluminum windbreaker idea!
my first brew with my little electric kettle was on my picnic table. thunder showers started. i unplugged it, carried it to the kitchen and resumed. watched the rain from inside
brewed in the rain many of times. I like weather (all types) so rain is always fun and somewhat poetic to me a long as it it is not coming down too hard. I really enjoy brewing in snow, as well. But I have to admit, a clear spring morning just as the sun is coming up and the sound of the burner roaring and clouds of smoke wafting past from a side project of boston butt smoking on apple, cherry and hickory tops all.
Edit: forgot to mention cup of hot coffee in my hand.
Especially when the beer and ribs come out great, and I have a prior batch on tap to serve with the bbq ! Hard to keep the neighbors away at that point!
Its actually a hell of a find. Great area in the middle of the city with about 150 feet of backyard. I brew on the small wood deck that extends from the house.
Well that’s a huge backyard. 150 feet is deeper than our entire lot.
I got nothing against alleys. I spend a lot of time in our alley, but less so since I replaced my old car. I think its the long fence line that makes me think alley.
Yes…I’ll be brewing in my unheated garage tomorrow morning. It’ll be about 19F when I start. Here’s what it looked like this morning. Some homebrewers are diehards I suppose.
