Celtic chestnut beer

Hello,

I am looking for a recipe for chestnut beer that would have been brewed by the Celts at the time when Roman Empire was overtaking Europe. So far I have only find gluten free recipes for chestnut beer.  I know that the Celts would not have used hops at that time so I would have to find another bittering agent.

Does anyone have a recipe or know of a good place to look?

check out the book Sacred and Healing Beers by Stephen Harrod Buhner for some hop alternative ideas.

I’m not sure of the history of malting in the area at that time. If malting wasn’t used then look into mead instead. Heather tips were a favorite of the picts. sweet gale is another popular brewing herb. Wormwood is an excellent bittering herb. very strong so go easy on it.

+10100 - I tried making my own Absinthe once. The flavor was horrendous and clung to my tongue for hours. The ensuing vomiting was epic. Needless to say, I stick to the commercial stuff nowadays.

hysterical!

true, but kept within reason it works really well. A friend of mine uses it in a hoppy pale ale and it adds a sharp edge to the bitterness that is intriguing.

Two old roommates bought a shot glass chess set. The one that lost used 160 proof absinthe. The chaos that followed was spectacular in every way.

We ended up propping him up in the tub and checked on him every half hour.

Ouch. That’s what you call being your own worst enemy.  ;)  Funny stuff.
