I have always cleaned my pots etc. with regular tap water from the faucet. Recently I have been thinking that maybe that isn’t a good idea. We take great care with our brewing water to take out the chlorine and make it good for brewing. I was wondering how many of you just use the local city water for cleaning and how many do something to the cleaning water?
this would include boil pots, kegs, bottles etc.
Use city water as is for cleaning.
I can’t thi8nk of any reason not to use it.
I normally clean with the hot water discharge from my immersion chiller. I fill up the now empty mash/lauter tun to hold water to clean the brew kettle after I drain the wort into the fermenter.
Some cleansers will leave calcium behind if your water is very hard. Oxyclean and other inexpensive percarbonate cleansers as well as most normal dish detergents. PBW, maybe others, have rinse agents that help prevent this buildup. A quick post normal rinse dip in starsan or another acid based sanitizer is a good solution to the buildup as well.
I use oxyclean for all of my normal brewday items and PBW for kegs where I can’t inspect them as easily.
There is a homemade PBW recipe floating around that add TPS substitute to aid in rinsing.
