I just made a counterflow wort chiller with some copper tubing that the wort will flow through. In terms of sanitation should I be concerned about the potential corrosive effects of sanitation solution on the interior of the piping? Will my usual routine of a weak chlorine bleach solution do? If this is a concern how should I be sanitizing the piping prior to my next batch?
Chlorine can be an effective sanitizer but YOU MUST make sure you remove all the chlorine prior to use.
I’m not sure if chlorine will have the same pitting impact on copper as it has on stainless
If it is all copper, you can sanitize it in the oven too.
You could circulate hot wort through it if you use a pump. Iodophor is the best choice for any metal.
Small design flaw now that I think of it but the copper tubing is coiled and cemented inside a PVC pipe that conducts the cold counterflow water. Probably should have avoided the cement as a hot oven would be the preferred sanitation method- maybe next time.
I just can’t understand why you would use chlorine at all. Use a strong cleanser such as PBW (or even just hot oxiclean) and recirculate or simply let soak. Then use a no rinse sanitizer such as star san.
+1 to sanitizing by recircing. Thats how I sanitize mine as well. I only ever run PBW through it on occasion.
