Diana Nyad - In the Water!

Ok, so for those of you not in LA or Florida, one of the hosts on KCRW (the big NPR affliate / alternative music station), decided at the age of 61 to revisit a record swimming attempt that eluded her back in the 70’s.

She’s swimming for 60 hours to go 103 miles from Havana to Key West. She still holds the record for open ocean swimming -102 miles from Bimini to Florida. (set in 1979)

The Story

Live Tracking Map

All I can say is 60 hours? 60? There’s nothing in this world I could do for 60 hours straight. Nothing. Not even sitting - let alone swimming through shark infested waters.

LA = Lower Alabama?  aka western Florida panhandle.

I remember when she did the Bahamas - Florida swim.  Very impressive.  I’ve made that crossing in a boat many times.  Can’t imagine swimming it.  Swimming across the Florida Straits is even gutsier (crazier?).  I’ve been down there in a boat too.  Shark infested is not a romantic description.  It is accurate.

Fair winds and a following sea Diana!

There’s a fine line between gutsy and crazy, and she’s right on that line.  Good luck Diana. I hope she succeeds, it would be a very impressive feat.

I believe she’s already in Havana.

If you were her,What do you do when they ask for your “papers” ???

Very cool…crazy, but cool!

That’s a 2:13 pace. Which is not a whole lot slower than I was swimming 1Ks at 17. :o

She started in Havana and is about 1/3rd of the way to Key West now.

She hasn’t gotten very far.  At least 100 times as far as I would get though.

Oh, I completely missed that.
For some reason I thought she started in Key West and when I looked at your tracking map early this morning, there she was in Havana.  I guess more coffee before posting is a good idea.

I ask you:  after swimming 103 miles, would you rather come ashore in Key West, or Havana?

Is that a trick question?  Havana is the home of the Mojito

That is true, but have one word for you:

Margaritaville!

I just saw the breaking news!

Abandoned efforts 29 hours in due to health complications. :frowning:

Ah, bummer.  Oh well, maybe she can try again some time.

I was hoping she would make it.  Good for her for trying!
