I think I have a handle on my process now. For the 3rd batch in a row I have hit 75 % efficiency or greater. I’ve got a batch of pale ale in the kettle now. 79% efficiency into it
That’s good. It is MUCH better to have a low number and consistently hit it than it is to have a high number that varies batch to batch. Predictability is the key. At that point, you’ll be able to start with pretty much any recipe and get into the ballpark on your first try every time.
This ^^
Just to be clear 75% is not low if we’re comparing…
Consistency.
Compare not…
Agreed. It looks like he has both decent efficiency and a reasonable shot group. It would be even better if tightened up a bit, but it is certainly getting there.
My first batches with all grain were bouncing all around. And because of knowing I was only getting in the 60’s that’s how I have been formulation my recipes.
Congrats.
Be aware that your mash efficiency will vary from recipe to recipe. My mash calculator has always been close to my actuals, I hit my preboil og within two points now and adjust my boil duration based on the preboil og.
Consistency goes hand in hand with knowing your system.
Very true. I know what it takes to get full extraction.
