Does a smoked porter go in Category 12 or 22B? Category 12 says a porter can have supporting flavours such as coffee so does smoke count? Or put it in both?
If the smoke flavor is immediately noticeable it should go in 22. If it’s a subtle hint that a judge may or may not pick up on, it probably wouldn’t do well in 22, and I’d enter it in 12 and hope they don’t notice.
Lots of smoked Porters listed under Commercial Examples in 22b. If yours has smoked flavors and aromas, that is where I would put it.
I brewed this today and after brewing, I’d be amazed if anyone even noticed the smoke. I’ll see when it’s done fermenting but the smoke was non existent in the wort (3 lbs home smoked malt, 7 lbs pale malt, 12 oz choc malt, 10 oz C45, 2 oz C120).
Based on this, it’s going in 12 unless it really changes after fermentation.
Quite disappointed on the lack of smoke…
