I’m headed to Fat Heads Portland tonight, so I’ll put this on my list to try. The other night I had the Fat Heads Semper FIPA and I didn’t like it at all. The Equinox hops were very oniony/garlicy to me. My wife liked it, but I didn’t.
Shakedown is their best stout. Oompa Loompa is pretty bad. As good as Shakedown is, their hoppy beers are that much better. Hop JuJu is great, but I don’t know if it really beats Head Hunter, their staple IPA. Which, i assume if you’ve had any Fat Heads in Florida, you’ve had it. Trail Head APA and Midnight Moonlight Black IPA are also both killer.
Good to know - I do love Head Hunter - one of my top IPAs. We only get HH, Jack Straw Pils, Sunshine Daydream, and some blueberry something or other. Occasionally, some random things, such as Shakedown.
Full disclosure - I make fruit beers for my wife and occasionally enjoy a pint. She and her friends drain 98% of them, but I’ll have a pint here and there. Secret - WY3522 works really nicely in a fruit beer, to give some nice Belgian character to the fruit. So far my man card hasn’t been revoked. You never know though, I may be on thin ice . ;D
I was disappointed in the Oompa Loompa when I had it at Festival of the Dark Arts, although while I was there the other night they had a Bourbon Barrel Aged version of Oompa Loompa with cherries that was amazing! I had their Pimp my Sleigh Belgian Dark which was nice. They didn’t have JuJu on tap in the Portland Brewery.
Interesting. I find it to be one of the most drinkable imperial IPAs out there being that it’s big but still plenty dry to drink. The hops present are chinook, simcoe, centennial, cascade, and Citra. I don’t get cat piss in any beer lol. It’s one of my favorite commercial IPAs. I have 10 in the fridge and probably need to get another 4 pack.
It always amazes me how we all taste things differently.
