Does anyone have any thoughts on why there isn’t more French cider imported into the U.S.?
It still is being imported. It’s just called Freedom Cider now. ;D
Probably because there’s no market for it. 99.9999% of Americans have absolutely no idea what good cider should taste like. If you want to find French cider or anything else worth drinking, it seems you need to purposely seek it out.
In the UK they have those big bag/boxes of scrumpy for cheap. Other than the fact that they are somewhat perishable I wish they exported those to the US!
Are you looking for anything specific? Good stuff is like 4-6 euros a bottle here and the ‘cheap’ stuff (which is still good, and it comes in plastic 2 liter bottles like coke, lol) is about 1.50. If you PM me your address I’ll try to send some your way when I get a chance.
As far as why they don’t import it, you got me. I really like the stuff, but the “brut” nature might be too dry for the average American palate to make exporting profitable.
I do love the dryness of the good French ciders, but Americans in general drink very little cider and when they do for the most part they want it sweet. I make 2 ciders one very dry and one backsweetened. The sweet one goes fast, the dry one is allowed to age gracefully.
