Frozen Grain

Let me toss this out there!!

I’m going away for the weekend and the temps are going down into the low 20’s. I have a grain delivery arriving Saturday and I will not be back home until Sunday evening.

Will freezing temps harm the grain in any way? My thoughts are that they won’t. It will be under cover.

Thoughts?

I imagine the grain bins in barley growing country  and at the maltsters, as well as the wholesale and retail storage warehouses are unheated. I imagine the grain has been exposed to freezing temps at least once by the time it gets to us.

Not a problem.

That makes sense. That’s just one of those questions I never thought to ask or needed to know until now.

Thanks guys!!

Actually, one benefit - freezing temps kill off weevils

Only reason grain will freeze is due to moisture. I don’t believe the grain we use for brewing has much moisture. Therefore, I do believe you are OK.

Left to sit in the opened, in the air, is another matter…

Another thought. Tell me where you live and I will come over and take the grains saving you from worry

If you stay gone a few days any weevils that might have been in the bag will be killed.

I have frozen bags of grain for a week in my chest freezer to kill weevils (I had an infestation). The grain was fine after.

Nice to know that will kill weevils.

I have anywhere between 50 and 150 pounds of grain on hand at any given time.  It is stored in an unheated garage.  I brew year round and winter temps frequently drop to 20 below zero.  I have never experienced a grain related problem (that I’m aware of), my pH, conversions and efficiencies all remain consistent from summer through winter.

Good to know everyone! Thanks
