FWH in BeerSmith

When entering first wort hops in BeerSmith, are you leaving the 60 minute timing as is or is there a larger IBU being extracted (or less)?

It has a fwh addition feature

Sorcery! Forgot about that, thanks.

Generally speaking, you get about 110% of an IBU contribution compared to the same boil, but yeah, BeerSmith will calculate it as such if you tell it FWH.  I do a 90 minute boil on practically everything, though, so I don’t do a 60 minute addition pretty much ever (I FWH everything because I’m creatively lazy).

FWH, eh?

I’ve only done it once.  Then had a  stuck sparge.  Terrible brew day. Haven’t done fwh since.

[emoji6] First wort hops are added to the kettle before first runnings.  I believe you’re referring to mash hopping.

No. I added them to the kettle.  Terrible  sparge. Ended up  scooping grain and dumping mash through a strainer. Just an  awful  brew day. Hotside aeration if it exists  like crazy

I tested it

Still confused.  Why did you need to scoop grain and dump your mash through a strainer if you added hops to the boil kettle as you were lautering from the mash tun?  The hops don’t contact the grain in FWH.

The hops were  in the kettle  as I began the sparge.  Then failure.  The fwh was only an issue that I had wort with lots of grain going into the  kettle. The beer turned out drinkable  but was certainly  in my early all grain  days and was trying too many  moving parts at once.

Got it, so it is more of a bad luck charm for you than a bad practice.
I’ve found less tendancy for boil overs with some hops in the kettle so it’s part of my standard procedure now for bittering addition.

Yes, I can’t say I’ve given it as fair try. Something I may try again.  Just not a pleasant  first time

HSA was probably near the bottom of my list of concerns.  I’ll erase it altogether.  Good read, thanks!

Love FWH! Most seem to think the IBUs can be approximated by plugging in a 20 minute boil value. Hot side aeration is a brewer’s myth, BTW.

I’m looking forward to the results of the FWH experiment from NHC.

My take on FWH is that while you seem to get about 10% more measurable IBUs, it doesn’t taste like it.  Since I tend to drink my beer rather than just measure it, I count FWH as what it tastes like to me, which is a 20 min. addition.

+1  Right to the heart of it Denny!

So many things are much better if you don’t measure

Agreed…
