I am thinking on buying some Perle hops in bulk. I will be brewing Pilsners only with them. How do they compare to other German hops? I can’t find a lot of reviews on these hops. They certainly have been around for a long time.
Sometimes Perle has high enough alpha to use for bittering, which may be an attraction. For flavor and aroma Perle, which I find minty and slightly earthy, is nice in a blend, but I find Mittelfrüh and Tettnang are still best as the star performers in Pilsner. I will be interested in seeing others’ opinions.
Perle is commonly used in lagers. I prefer Magnum for bittering, just because of the high alpha acid level - I use less hops that way. For late hop additions, any of the Hallertauer, Perle, Mittelfruh, or Tettnanger hops are fine, too - depends on the profile you are seeking. Saaz is a must for Bo Pils IMHO.
