Grain Bill Question

Very excited to say I received a box of various un-milled grains today! This may seem obvious, but is there any preferred way to mill the grains? For example, should I mix all of the grain together then pour it in the mill or can I just grind it one type at a time and mix it up?

I do a quick mix, mill, then mash. I’m fairly sure that between the milling and the mash stiring the grains get well mixed. I might be more cautious if there was a lot of grain with no diastatic power, like unmalted wheat.

Grinding separate would probably work, though some grains are harder and once I heard a complaint that chocolate malt would gum up a mill. Not sure if that’s true, but mixing with base malt seems to solve it.

I mill together. The only exception is small grains like wheat and rye. Those I double mill vs. adjusting my mill to accommodate.

So the torrified wheat that I have?

If it is smaller than a grain of barley malt, I mill twice. I mill the small grains and then re-mill with the rest of the grains.

+1 i like to really bust up the smaller wheat kernels.
