Grain Storage

What does everyone use for grain storage?  I’m about to start keeping larger quantities of my base malts on hand.  I’ve been look around and seen all kinds of things but I want to make sure I get something that will keep it fresh and able to sit in my spare bedroom.

I found these and they look very interesting.

Let me know your thoughts guys!

Santé!

You’ll find several threads on this with a little searching.  I use the 50 lb vittles vault: http://www.amazon.com/Vittles-Vault-50-50-Pound-Stackable/dp/B0002DJOOI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1399490513&sr=8-2&keywords=vittles+vault.

I’ve got four and they work great.  I’ve never paid this high a price however.

Awesome.  I called myself doing a search.  Thank you for your input.  Off to search some more!  I’ll reply to those threads guys!

Thanks!

I like the used frosting buckets from commercial bakeries. They hold 3.5 gallons, seal well, stack, and have a handle for carrying to wherever you’re going to weigh. For specialty grains, I like to use the plastic peanut containers. These hold a bit over 2 pounds, and are transparent so I know how much I have on hand.

I use food safe buckets and gamma seal lids from home depot

Are you all opening your sacks and pouring in the grains? Or do you put them in closable bags first? I have seen some posts here about storing several varieties in bags in one vittles vault, but what about a fresh 50# sack?

I have four of the 40-pound Vittles Vaults. They work great and are sized perfectly for the shelving I store them on.

Keep in mind that they will only store around 42-44 pounds of malt.

I usually dump everything in.  I keep different base malts in each (currently maris otter, 2-row, pils and vienna). I keep speciality malts in a different container.

I keep them in zip lock bags and the bags in buckets with lids. Although I have been known to store grain all over the house… My wife hates it! ;D
FYI … The 2.5 gallon ziplocs are a good storage media… at least for me

20 gallon Brute garbage cans with weatherproof seals I made for full sacks. Medium and small snap top bins with weatherproof seals for 10-20 pound grains. Rubbermaid snap top bins for 1-5 pound grains

I found the most economical solution is to use ANY 5 gallon buckets, Gamma lids or the standard lids with seals and just line them with food safe bag liners.  Each bucket holds about 25 pounds of grain.  If you are getting some overseas malt, chances are you are going to use at least 5 pounds for your next recipe and then you can split the rest among two buckets.

I use food-grade 5-gallon buckets from Walmart.

Just curious why the bag? If your storing grain (not liquid) do you really need food safe buckets?

I use these: Amazon.com

They are on wheels, they’re cheap, and they hold an entire 50# sack of malt.

+1

I bought 6 of these from Bed, Bath, and Beyond for $23.99 with free shipping for orders over $49.

It’s the cheapest I have been able to find them.

Vittles Vault II

Although now I have 6, not 5.

These are what I use too and love them. Sealed, mobile and as mentioned hold an entire sack of grain.

Vittles vaults here as well.
