hemp

wondering if anyone has had any experience with recreational hemp, either in addition to or in lieu of hops.  i imagine it would require alot and would not be very cost efficient so i’m hoping to gain some wisdom from anyone who has traveled down that road with any success.

thanks for your input and suggestions.

Why would you want to?

I’ve tried it and it’s not worth it.  Drink a beer and smoke a joint.

Sounds like some sage advice, Denny!

I’ve heard all sorts of stories. A tincture added at bottling/kegging time is the best way. Don’t expect that using it like hops will get you anywhere at all.

No bittering qualities, unless you get busted.

I’ve had hemp seed beers and they are really good, the toasted hemp seeds add a nice nutty character, untoasted they seem a bit toasty maybe.  I’m guessing really, I’ve only had them in a few beers, including one in Switzerland,  but with no similar but undosed beers to compare.

They’re totally legal to brew, I think in the US you’re just not allowed to plant the seeds.  I had a hemp beer at Hobson’s Choice in SF, and AFAIK Kettlehouse in Montana uses hemp seeds to make Fresh Bongwater and Olde Bongwater.  I’ve had the Fresh, it was good, Olde was a seasonal that I missed.

why?  more like why not?  people make brownies and countless other baked goods.  just figured if anyone had any luck putting it in a brew it’d be a fun way to go.  i wanted to ask this forum before i jumped into anything.  almost everyone here is extremely helpfull.  glad i did.  i never thought about using the seeds, though.  that might be a good way to go.  if i come up with anything i’ll let ya’ll know.

thanks for the advise.
