Hop Burst IPA

Just made an IPA with 10 varieties of hops.  Magnum for bittering and 9 varieties at 4 minutes.  Dry hopped .5 oz of 7 varieties too.

Hope it comes out!

Dave

Just 1/2 oz? Man I woulda shoved at least 5-6 oz’s in there

Are you really going to leave us hanging on these 9 varieties?!?!

And why are you calling this thread “hop burst IPA” did you use the hop bursting technique?

It’s absolutely bursting with hops!

Be VERY careful!  If your alpha acid level becomes super-critical the results are unthinkable:

.5 oz x 7 varieties so 3.5 oz total.  Didn’t want to overdo it… ::slight_smile:

FWH with .5 oz Magnum.  Then Cascade, Amarillo, Cluster, Chinook, Simcoe, Perle, Willamette, Citra, and Calypso at 4 minutes.

Dry hopped with all the 4 minute hops except Perle and Simcoe as they were pellets and the rest leaf.

Dave

LOL  That’s funny!

What exactly is the proper hop burst technique?

Oh, I thought 1/2 oz total. My bad.

All of the hopping is done in the last 15 minutes, using a lot of hops, maybe 5 - 10+ oz spread incrementally over the last 15 minutes. Obviously hop bitterness is somewhat lower with this method, and therefore leaves a slightly maltier flavor up front, followed by the huge hop flavor from all the late hopping.

So the taste schedule follows the boil schedule?

10 oz. of hops is expensive  :o

Expensive at LHBS prices. Online by the pound makes it much more affordable.

My LHBS sells their hops at a blanket rate of $2.99/oz. Online will range, but normally I pay $0.60-1.50. I do have to bite my tongue when I see others loading up on hops.

+1.  Definitely helps to buy in bulk if you brew a lot of American styles. I use ~ a lb for an AIPA, and that’s pretty painful at the LHBS  per oz rate !

I typically buy for the year at harvest time from HopsDirect and stuff the top of my lagering fridge.  I bought 12 lbs of hops which, combined with about 2lbs of homegrown Cascades and 1lb of homegrown Chinook should last me all year.

It cuts the cost by about 2/3 not including the homegrown…

Dave

I just kegged this thing.  Holy toledo!  What a cacophony of hop aroma and flavor!  Can’t wait to put this one on tap in a few weeks…

Dave

What varieties did you use Dave?  Sounds great !

EDIT  -  Sorry, read your previous post . Just about every aroma captured in that blend .

Yea, if the Centennial leaf harvest wasn’t a bust I’d have it pretty cornered!
