Has anyone tried the Hop Rocket as a Randall-type hop infuser?
No, but I am planning to purchase one soon. I want to use it mostly as a hopback but would also like to use it as a Randall. Blichmann states that it can be used as such.
I think one would want to get the 1/2 inch to 1/4 flare set up for doing that. John had those at the NHC. Here is what I am talking about on the Norther Brewer page.
Used mine as a hopback and a torpedo. Need to try the Randall next.
Because I am on dial up at home and could never download such a thing! Does it appear to work without too much foaming? I’d rather buy one than rig one (assuming it works!)
DIY around $50
Hop rocket $125
DFH Randall $375 http://www.dogfish.com/company/tangents/randall-the-enamel-animal.htm
Yeah … but I’m not buying it. My brewery is. And it’s stainless. 8)
But never mind. A friend of mine is going to mail me him. I needed it for a festival this weekend. Still may look into one in the future. I agree it is pricey. But like I said … it’s stainless. 8)
It is a thing of beauty, inside and out. Ask your friend if he has had the high flow mod done. I bought an early one, sent the top in for the mod. Now it holds 3 Oz, but less chance for the hops to plug it up.
I’ve got one. Love it. Also useful as an inline post-chill infuser for various things, as long as they’re not any smaller than the little filter holes.
Totally worth it. I could build one DIY but it wouldn’t be nearly as resilient as the hop rocket.
(It’s also the only thing from Blichmann I own, because everything else they make is way too expensive/easy to find an alternative to)
I have used as a randall and works great. Go slow let rocket fill up and sit full a couple of minutes and the flavor shines . They do foam pour into a pitcher first let settle and enjoy. Well worth it.
I’m making one, this weekend out of a stainless steel canister, screens & a couple hose barbs.
Will probably cost me about $20 total.
I feel like there would be something lost if you can’t see the beer and the hops mixing. As I understand it the original ‘randall the enamel animal’ was made from one of those transparent plastic filter housings so when you filled it with hops and beer you could watch all the action.
Looking good.
Unlike the Morebeer that has a loose lid.
Just pick up a home in-line water filter housing and replace the filter cartridge with steel coffee screen (I’ve seen an old bazooka screen used, but its more likely to let leaf chunks through).

Its affordable AND you can see the magic happen (sorry… its not stainless).
