My plan for the new year is to grow some hops in the yard, and I’d like to do Centennial, but can’t get them from the UK or mainland Europe. Does anyone know what shipping regulations are in regards to rhizomes? I’d have them delivered first to my dad who would then send them to me here in France via UPS.
I would love to give you details, but I can’t. The details are probably squicky at best. Countries tend to get jumpy about growable agriculture crossing borders.
So for $20 maybe it’s worth it to give it a shot? Label it “hops/beer ingredients” maybe? My MIL sent me some cuban cigars one time in a package marked “towels.” The box was wrapped in towels :-p
I looked into this, as I live in the UK and would like to grow some US hops.
It is illegal to import plant matter into the EU without a license.
It is also worth noting that rhizomes are generally available in the US later than you would normally plant in the EU as a result of differing climatic conditions. This might not be a problem, but some things wont like being planted if its too warm.
Great question, PL, thanks for asking. I’m interested in this, too. I found some local rhizomes a couple years ago, but nobody knows what variety they are. That’s the best I’ve been able to do.
