It’s time to go back to American Pale Ale

Update
This Pale Ale that I made just three weeks ago won 1st place this weekend at my Homebrew Club’s annual Throwdown. I will also get to brew this beer at a local brewery because the owner/brewer liked it so much. I think I might be on to something. A crusade to bring back American Pale Ale!

I looked up my prior attempt on a 5.5 gallon batch of Belgian Ale ale., 1.049 OG

38% Pale Ale malt
38% Light Munich malt
14% Kiln Amber malt from MFB
10% Wheat malt

2 oz Saaz leaf 5.1% AA, 90 mins
1 oz Saaz leaf 5.1% AA 5 mins

IMPERIAL BEER YEAST, B45 GNOME

Minimal tasting notes, I recall too hoppy, predicted was 34 IBU. It fit within the current guidelines of 20-35 IBU.

Goose, it appears your Belgian Pale Ale recipe is missing 3% of something. [77+10+5+5=97]

Although I do not use this often, I used 3% Acid Malt to get the pH right in the mash. If you do not need to adjust the pH just up the Pils to 80%.

I’ve been known to brew an hommage to SNPA a few times…actually, on batch 87 :wink:

Agreed. I like old school. My favorite APA is Two Row, C20 and single hop (Cascade). Turns out wonderfully drinkable all the time.

A solid recipe! I have a version on tap at home.

I recently brewed a 5 gallon batch of APA. Used 95% Rahr 2 row malt with 5% Briess Crystal 40 malt. Used Centennial hops for bittering and Cascade hops later in the boil. Used Citra hops at the end of the boil. Used Lallemand BRY-97 yeast. I’m enjoying drinking it now!

Just back from a month’s holiday travelling the USA (from Australia) and was quite disappointed to see very few breweries having the Pale Ale on tap. IPAs and all sorts of odds and sods abound, but few simple Pale Ales. I brew similar versions down here (british and australian pale ales) … of course only the hops vary.

Yes it is Double This, Tripple That and Imperial the other thing. I am glad lagers are becoming popular but waiting for them to start selling Imperial Pilsners then the normal ones will go away

Fortunate to be in Washington DC at the Churchkey. Excellent beer bar.

They always seem to have Sierra Nevada Pale ale available on cask!

Swan neck with sparkler knocks out a lot of CO2 but still a wonderful beer

Pale ale is one of my favorite beers to drink but one I haven’t brewed yet. I’ll have to do that soon. I like that it is refreshing without overpowering hop bitterness that many IPA’s have.

Speaking with Sierra Nevada last night and they said the Pale Ale is their number 2 seller (Hazy Little Thing is the number one) and that the sales of Pale have been slipping consistently for years.

i think this is actually a really interesting thread, and what i perceive from it is:
a suggestion of RDWHAHB
bring back the malt and the crystal
use up-to-date techniques on these classic american pale ale concepts to show what they can do

i do like this a lot

I’ve been brewing a lot for competition beginning last yr thru today. I blame Tommy. He said, “I think I’ll send a beer to AL Brewer’s Cup.” I thought I can do that. …and so it began.

However, I decided that after the next two ‘comp beers’ on deck, I am going to brew a personal consumption beer. Not sending it off …just one for me. Before I saw this post I decided on an old school APA. Thought it was interesting to then see this post.

I just took the Nearly Nirvana Pale Ale recipe from last year’s big brew and brewed it with half Cascade and half Loral. It turned out very nice. :beers:
