Label Peelers...check those dates!

A while back I bought a bunch of yeast from Label Peelers. S-189, W-34/70, Diamond Lager, S-05, etc.

I did not inspect each yeast package, instead they were placed in the fridge for future use.

Recently I went to get some yeast from the fridge, and here is what I discovered…surprised is an understatement. I have no receipt, or they would be sent back. Just a heads up to all of you!

Wow! That’s crazy old.

I have never gotten an expired pack from Label Peelers. I have gotten a few within a few months of expiration.

September - 2007. Unbelievable. I was not even brewing actively during that time.
How could a brew supply house have stock this old? And furthermore, how could they knowingly sell it to a customer?

What exactly is US-56?

When exactly did you buy it?

Purchased late last summer. Bought a bunch of yeast at that time. They were having a sale.

1056 - American Ale

It’s what US-05 used to be called

I been burned before. Now I check dates on any yeast that is shipped to me or that I buy at a homebrew shop. I go to Midwest once in a while and now they don’t let customers grab their own yeast, it’s behind the register. I suspect customers were grabbing the freshest yeast and leaving the old stuff behind.

I’d be curious to see if it comes alive in a starter. If it does, dry yeast lasts a lot longer than expected.

It was the name for US05 before they were sued and had to change it to US05

Dang. I’ve brewed good beer with 5 year old dry yeast, but 15 is REALLY pushing it. I received slightly out of date dry yeast from a different company a long time ago. When I emailed them they told me dry yeast lasts a long time. I agreed, but told them if I had gone in person I would have bought newer yeast or at least expected a discount. They sent me fresher yeast.
FYI: when I bought dry yeast from Label Peelers the dates were fine.

Any thoughts on this one? Throw in the trash? Bake bread? Take a long shot chance on an Ale?

And…how did this end up being delivered to me? 15 year old yeast?

Dry yeast can last a long time past date if stored properly.  But you don’t know this was.  And 15 years is more than I’d be comfortable with.  I’d toss it.

Vintage… they changed the name right after that was made.  I bought Diamond lager yeast from them and while it wasn’t expired, I didn’t like the results and thought it smelled off for dry yeast.  This makes me question where exactly they are getting their yeast and how it’s stored, especially given how cheap they sell it.

Well, kinda but not exactly

My search revealed this was a substitute for 1056.

I just now emailed Label Peelers, asking them if I might exchange this yeast. This really has me scratching my head…

It started as 1056, but due to drying it isn’t a lot like it any more.  Pretty much true of any dry yeast and it’s liquid sucessor.

Heard back from Label Peelers…they have no record of this.

I checked out as a guest on this order.

This is like the time I bought those beans from a man on the street, and when I turned around, he had disappeared.  I never planted them… perhaps if you brewed with this yeast, something magical would happen.

Here is the response:

I checked your account and also checked your name and there are no orders from you for any yeast besides the Diamond Lager. Also, we don’t carry a US-56 yeast.
Furthermore, we are located a few miles down the road from the national supplier of all homebrew shops, LD Carlson and restock 5 days a week. So we only keep a one day supply of any of our products on hand at anytime. That way, we know that we have the freshest yeast. The US-05 is our most popular yeast and we run through it super fast and replenish it daily. There is really no now way that we could have had a 15 year expired yeast on hand at anytime.

This is highly questionable, as at least one or more of my previous Diamond purchases had Label Peelers sell yeast that was within a few weeks of the expiration date. I do not buy their story. And might not buy their yeast.

This particular order contained Diamond, and the other yeasts mentioned. They all came in a plain white plastic pouch. I simply threw it in the fridge as the yeast was not needed immediately. It was only after opening the package that I got a big surprise…September - 2007.

Just a heads up to all of you who purchase from Label Peelers. Buyer beware.
