Lazy Saturday (for once)

I plan on doing almost nothing this Saturday save a bit of work on the deck/in the garden. I could use some advice about what to do, as I have almost never “done nothing.” Not saying you guys are lazy, of course, but I just need some ideas. Already planned are: smoking a cigar, going for a walk, drinking some of these crazy hoppy beers I ordered, and grilling chicken wings with this recipe: Ultimate Grilled Buffalo Wings :: The Meatwave

But that will only get me so far. Any ideas? Perhaps a movie that might round out all that stuff nicely? Sci-fi is good, as is horror or comedy, or something good for, shall we say, altered states of mind?

As far as movie suggestions are concerned I would suggest “Inception”.  Another idea would be to check out a museum.  Just my $0.02

That counts as “Doing Something” though…

Seen it, that was a fun movie! I pass by the bridge they do that mirror-y thing in every day on my commute. Museums etc are a good idea, but unfortunately require about an hour of train ride each way. Still there’s an aviation museum not too far away, that might work.

the list could go on & on… go fishing, play with the baby, take a nap, read a book, drink some more beer, take another nap, play with the baby again, lie on your back & watch the clouds go by, sit by the river & watch the water go by (oh, I already said go fishing), hell … just drink some more beer & do what ever seems best at the moment.

I suppose I’m destroying my own restfullness with my desire to have everything planned to the minute. 10:00 → 10:16 RELAX 10:16 → 10:20 OPEN BEER 10:21 → 10:30 TURN CHICKEN etc. You have a good point.

You aren’t by chance an Engineer are you?  ::slight_smile: You’ve already got a lot on your plate for a guy that’s planning to do “nothing”.  That said I like what I would suggest you approach as a proposed outline for your day; dink around in the yard, put a screw in the deck and call it good, eat well, enjoy that stogie take a nap and drink your beer. Let the day come to you if you can stand to, it will go faster than you think. Enjoy. Cheers.

LOL!

May I suggest doing jack sh!t all weekend? F the chores. Get drunk, eat and chillax. As long as there’s plenty of food and beer sometimes I don’t leave the confines of my property all weekend. Awake on Monday, refreshed and ready to return to work.

You have to master the art of the couch-back slouch and the appropriate grip on the remote. A few tries and you’ll have it down pat. 8)

Phil,
I just googled your location.  I went through there in February on my way to CDG from my nephew’s house.  He lives in Saclas south of Etampes.    That’s a nice area.
If I actually had a day off I would just putter around in the garden with lots of beer in easy reach of my shade-tree lawn chair.

I can’t believe you’re asking for ideas on how to stay busy when you want to plan on doing nothing… I’m sure there’s another forum for something like this…

Man, Inception was a rip off of the Matrix movies…okay okay, they may have elaborated a little bit on the ideas presented in the Matrix movies…

No kids, eh Euge?

Oh dude, I’m the master of doing nothing! Seriously, since I moved to Idaho, I take six weeks off, then fly back to Ohio and work for two. I have two motytos in life. One…“I do less by noon than most people don’t do all day”…and two…“You can’t drink all day unless you start in the morning.”
So, get up late Saturday morning, don’t even think about putting pants on, go make some eggs, and wash it down with a cup of coffee, to be washed down with a beer. If the weather is nice, shuffle out to the deck with a good book, some music, and more beer. Have a big ole’ sammich for lunch with more beer. Take a nap on the couch, wake up to a beer, fire up the grill for your wings, and have a beer.
If you need any help, I’ll be glad to stop over.  ;D

Alright, Weaz, just fly your pantless ass to France and give him a hand.  I’d say you should just sleep all day, don’t even eat, drink or go to the bathroom.  That’s doing nothing.
I prefer a life of leisure.  I don’t really ever do NOTHING all day, I get so bored.  But I don’t do much.  On Saturdays I sleep pretty late (11am or so), get up, bum around for a couple hours.  Then I bike down to the bike shop, hang out until they close at 4 or 5, then go drink beer somewhere or go home and drink beer.  Love Saturdays.

Sleep - play with son - drink beer…  repeat

Yeah. I found out last night that there actually is some stuff that I need to take care of Saturday evening so I don’t have the whole day free, and honestly I don’t even know why I had my heart set on doing ‘nothing.’ I guess I’m just feeling a little overwhelmed with responsibility and work and whatnot and just wanted a break. But, I’m going to Brussels to hang out with Theoman and go on the Toer de Gueze in a couple weeks, so there’s that.

My problem is like Pinski said, I have an Engineer’s mindset, everything has to be planned out. My wife and I talked about this last night and she made a good point, it’s silly for me to think I need to have a whole day for it to be ‘relaxing’ and I should just try to enjoy the time I have free.

Etampes is a fun city, and SUPER old. I’m reading Gregory of Tours’ History of the Franks (from ~540 AD) and he mentions Etampes. The Tour Guinette is from the 12th century and the church we sometimes attend mass at is from the 11th century (which is pretty amazing when you think about it).

Any of you guys ever nearby, give me a holler, I always have beer ready.

My son was born when I was 44 years old.  Several of my coworkers at the power plant at the time had grown up children.  I asked them for their perspective on raising children since my son was my first.  I asked, “if you had it to do over again, what would you change?”.

Their answers were the same, “Work less and spend more time with my children.  They grow up so fast.  I missed so much of that.”

I took that advice to heart and try to spend as much time with my wife and son as possible.  My friends were right.  My son will be twelve in September.  Seems like a couple a weeks ago I was changing his diaper.  They grow up so fast!  Don’t miss it.

^^^^ Here, here!  (and a big +1)

I just turned 40 and my youngest is 2.5.  When my daughter (almost 8  ) was his age, her nap time was my nap time on the weekends (usually with he snuggled in Daddy’s lap).  My wife is a nurse so frequently works weekends and nights and its just me and the kids Saturday afternoon.  Many Saturdays I’d like nothing better than repeat that with my son and sometimes I do, but my daughter looks forward to that time as ‘daddy-daughter time.’  I know I don’t have that many more years left where she actually wants to spend her Saturday afternoon with her dad, so I take advantage of it every chance I can (even if we just end up watching Mythbusters, Animal Planet or Glutton for Punishment).

My nephew lives on a cul du sac at the base of a hill.  After his house was built 20 years ago Roman ruins were discovered in the lot adjacent to his house so no further building can be done on his street.  It’s fascinating to look out our bedroom window and see the half excavated Roman town walls coming out of the dirt.  We spent an afternoon there ;last summer walking through the hills looking at other excavations.  I noticed that the ancient Romans who lived in France ate a lot of candy bars and drank lots of beer in green bottles, you can still find those artifacts in the ruins today.
