Here’s a pic from my latest session - Golden Bock and only 6oz hops in 12gal.
Think this looks about right for what’s “left behind”? The runoff into the conical was almost completely clean.

Looks good to me.
Looks pretty normal to me too!
I’m having a hard time telling how much is there from the photo, but I’ve always figured whatever volume you need to leave behind to get clear wort is the “right” amount.
What’s that circular gizmo? You could probably get better separation in the whirlpool if it wasn’t disrupting the flow.
Looks like a blichmann hopblockers to me. if hes using elecric in that setup i doubt hes whirlpooling. ive expected in the setup i am bulind to similiar effect to leve behind about .5G between kettle and pump. at the homebrewing level its not very siginificant.
You could probably leave less wort behind if you got rid of that silly blichman thing.
If you get clean wort, I wouldn’t worry about losses unless it’s a cost problem for you. I know people who have problems with the blichmann, which is the only reason I bring it up.
it is the hopblocker, and I’ve measured the amount, albeit with hops, trub et al at around .75gal (from a 12 gal batch).
narvin - I’m still going back and forth on whether to use the hopblocker or not. on the one hand, if I use it, I get 90-95% clean wort into the fermenter and need to only dump a little bit, if any at all, from the cone. but am short on my target volume a bit.
on the other, if I runoff with no screen, i do suck up a good deal of goop that comes out with a dump of 1-2 quarts.
I’m still debating which works best for me - I’ve been doing so for months now, however.
Well Paul, if you are missing some beer just brew more often
Other then that it looks fine.
I use a strainer between BK and HX.
It works fine but I do it as I would not plug the HX.
I am not in the mood to take it apart at all.
