I will be in London this Sunday and Monday for work. I think I will have at least one afternoon, if not both, available to be a tourist. Any recommendations for specific beers and/or pubs to look for?
Check out Meantime Brewing in Greenwich. Take note that there are 3 locations and you have to get it right: - the new production brewery which doesn’t have a taproom, and is tours by appointment only (so skip it); the Old Brewery brew pub right by the Cutty Sark which is touristy and kinda lacks atmosphere; or their public house tucked away on a sidestreet called the Greenwich Union, which has all their taps, cozy atmosphere and great food.
Make sure you go the Union! http://www.greenwichunion.com/
arustyt - where are you staying? Greater London is a big place. Recommendations will depend on where you are located.
I’ll be staying in Canary Wharf.
Then Greenwich it is since its walking distance under the River Thames. And no that’s not a typo, there’s an old foot tunnel that connects the Isle of Dogs to Greenwich Market.
Yeah, you are pretty limited unless you want to spend time in the DLR or tube. I have not been to London in years, but I have heard great things in regards to small nano’s opening up all over the place.
Fancy A Pint has led me to some good pubs in London
You can search an area or by Tube station. I imagine a lot of pubs around Canary Wharf will be closed Sunday, so check ahead if you can.
Pick up a copy of CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide. It is an annual book that lists all of the best real ale pubs by county with a good description of each one, listing the beers they have on tap among other things. London is divided into several sections.
Thanks for the suggestions. May not have a lot of options where I am staying (Canary Wharf), especially on Sunday. I am currently in Detroit waiting for my flight to London. I’ll let you know what I find.
Weatherspoon’s is a chain of pubs all over the uk. Most all have a unique name and their own atmosphere. They almost always have cask ales. There should be at least one near you.
The Grapes on Narrow St. is a historic pub overlooking the Thames.
Check micros like The Kernel and BBNO. Both are almost together. But I dont know If these micros open on sunday or monday.
I am back from London as of last night. I did not have a lot of time to explore but did make it to one pub called “The Gun” which was suggested by the hotel concierge as an authentic English pub.
They had several beers on tap, 4 of which were cask ales.
Here I am on the patio area, overlooking the Thames, enjoying a “Jugged Hare”. The white dome on the other side of the Thames is the Millenium Dome which was featured in the James Bond movie, “The World is Not Enough.”
Looks like the hotel gave you good advice. The Adnam’s pump clip makes me wish for a pint.
Very cool photos! Looks like a great trip. Thanks for the update!
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese is the place to go for a London Porter, old speckled hen or even a boddingtons.
