Low OG - Can you add dry DME to the fermenter

My last batch came in low.  It’s sitting in the fermenter right now.

I know I can add sugar to bring the gravity up to where I want it.

Can I add DME to the fermenter?

I’ve added sugar straight in and am thinking of doing the same with DME.

Thoughts?

not sure how well it would dissolve. If you dissolved it first in some boiled water it should work.

Isn’t it pretty much just sugar?  I would think the yeast would tear it up like they would plain sugar.

Maybe not, though.

I’m tempted to try.  I’d rather not add more water.

I see two possible issues. Sanitation and DME clumps.

I think you’re right. It clumps like mad.

I think if you dissolved it in a small amount of boiling water to break up lumps and cooled that it’d work ok. Is it fermenting yet ?  If not you’d be able to mix it pretty uniformly and not worry about aeration.

i agree, it will certainly clump up big time, I’d boil it up in the smallest amount of water possible, cool and add it

Add extra DME to compensate for the new water addition as well.

It’s fermenting now. I’ll wait a day or two until it slows and add the dme in the smallest amount I water possible.

Big kraesen already so I’ll just let it go for now.

I added a pound of DME to 3 cups water.  Big time clumping.  It was a humid night, too, so it was clumping before it even hit the water.  Glad I didn’t try to add it straight to the fermenter.

I usually mix up a cup of light dme in a quart or two of water. I would boil it for 10 minutes, cover it and let it cool down. Then I would pour it into my secondary before transfering from the primary. I also and a few pellets of hops for good measure doing the boil.
