Mash and boil drain pipe mod

I have been using my mash and boil over my herms setup for ease of use. Love it.  But it needs a drain pipe as i recirculate.  i have seen some nifty adjustable dealios on youtube and they look cool.  But with all the stuff I have around, i can put a bulkhead in the malt tube, extend a 4 inch stainless pipe and then put a bazooka tube on it. It would be like 5 inches of tube with 12 inches of bazooka screen.  Is there some reason this won’t work? Is there something about drain pipes I don’t get?  Thanks for your help!

The “drain pipes” some systems come equipped with are, essentially, overflow pipes. Adjusting the flow rate to maintain the liquid level above the grain bed is pretty standard whether or not the system is equipped with an overflow pipe. The setup you describe would create a path of lower resistance for much of the liquid, allowing it to return to the bottom of the kettle without passing through the grain bed.

Well that makes sense!  Thanks!
