What’s surprised you recently?
For instance, as I’m sitting here writing an article - just on a whim - I threw on the streamer an old Queensryche album and suddenly not only am I transported back to high school, but I’m reminded just how much influence this particular album had over those years and some of my resultant music taste.

I had that happen a few years ago when I listened to Pearl Jam’s Ten for the first time in years. Not only did the memories come back, but it occurred to me that I never realized how good of an album that is.
I felt similarly when I listened to Yes’ Tales from Topographic Oceans recently. Everytime I cue that one up, its the sort of music I will never mentally master, I will always just sort of listen to in awe, and a sort of pleasant, admiring confusion.
Tonight though, its “Very Yes” from the Rubber Band’s “Live in Louisville 1978”. Phelps “Catfish” Collins passed away a few days ago, and the obvious but still somewhat raw realization that all my musical heroes are getting up in age and not too long from departure, is quite poignant.
Catfish takes the solo:
First Gary Shider and now Catfish Collins, not a great year for funk guitarists.
Black Sabbath Paranoid (album not the song). Exact same feeling.
Wore the grooves out of that when there was such a thing as grooves.
