Mystery yeast.

Found eight 8oz PET bottles of harvested yeast in a box in the back of my fridge. Been there since last summer? Could be WLP001 or it could be WLP530 but there’s nothing to indicate what they are.

Is it even any good at this late date?!

i’d throw it out.

Ditto… Yeast is cheap!

I’d make a starter and see how it tastes.

At that age, you should have no problem growing it back up. No sense in throwing away good yeast.

Unless you don’t know what kind it is  ::slight_smile:

Grow and taste 530 and 001 should have a different taste. but what does a vial cost? Can you afford to take cheap to an extreme.

Yeah if it was labeled I’d feel more comfy about it. I really don’t want any more 530. My long affair with Belgian styles is over. While I may do a little sumpin sumpin with a saison now and again I won’t be brewing any more dubbels tripels or abbeys.

If it was 001 that would kickass.

That’s the saddest thing I’ve ever heard. :o

But if you make a starter with it and it revives and makes good beer, it doesn’t really matter at all  ‘what kind’ it is.
If you have any sense of adventure, just try it (I would).  It may turn out great.

If you like to play it safe, then dump it…as has been pointed out, yeast is cheap enough.

DITTO to Prof’s opinion IF U wanted either possible yeast BUT since U KNOW U don’t want 530 (I AGREE!) U have 50% chance of building a throwaway so I would pitch it and save the one commodity no one can buy…time

Yeah I think this is the correct course of action. Waste of time on a gamble as it is. Maybe I can use it for bread-making.

Thanks guys.

It’s a floor cleaner…it’s a breath freshener!!..He’s a brewer…he’s a baker!! Use bread yeast ALONG with this unless U want very dense loaf…BTW,if U mill some malted barley to a flour (the BEST use for a Corona) and sieve it so the husks are removed,a 1/4 cup in a 1 1/2 lb loaf is TERRIFIC

Eh? Pretty sad and downright questionable.
