national home brew comp

I am entering for the first time this year.  Most likely bottling from keg.  Does anyone have tips for a rookie?

What equipment do you have to bottle with?

I suggest chilling the bottles to near freezing, purging bottles with CO2 to reduce oxidation, then filling from the bottom using tubing connected to the tap under low transfer pressure.  Use O2 scavenging caps.  Good luck.

Capping on foam will also take care of the O2.  I’ve gone from taking a racking cane jammed inside the cobra tap, to using a stopper on the racking cane and release pressure as it’s filling.  I now have a beer gun, but when I’m filling only a couple bottles, I use a bottle filler tube that fits into my perlick taps.

As mentioned above, cold bottles and low pressure.  Try to fill from the bottom of the bottle instead of pouring down the side.  Either cap on foam or hit with CO2 if you can.

Good luck with the competition ( and getting an entry)!

This video will show you how to do it on the cheap…

I’m partial to a single valve counter pressure filler… But I bottle from a keg pretty frequently.

+1.  Gotta love the beer gun. But I still use the cane in the cobra for filling a couple on the fly.
