New Hopunion Variety databook

A great resource has gotten even better with the release of the new Hopunion variety databook.  I haven’t figured out how to d/l it yet, but maybe one of you geniuses here can.  It’s online at http://www.hopunion.com/17_HopVarietyHandbook.cfm?p3=open .

They’re using Issu Publishing, but they’ve disabled (or just failed to enable) downloading.

I have an opinion about that, but it’s not terribly kind. I would say contact them and say “People would love to have a download of this like they’ve had of your pdf for years!”

That may be what I do.  Maybe we should start a campaign!  Heck, I’d even pay (a reasonable amount) for it.  But it would be great if they looked at it as a sales tool and made it freely downloadable.

I’ve got a print copy that I’ve kept on my desk since I got it.  Would be a shame if they didn’t let you download it.  I see you can print at least one page of a time of it, maybe print to PDF and recombine.  I’m hesitant to scan or do that and release it since it does have the typical “No part of this book may be reproduced…”

It’ll let you print as far as I can see, but unfortunately not to file.

Thanks for the tip, James, and thanks for respecting their wishes.

the jpgs of each page are freely accessible and available if you take the document ID from the page source like this:

now just replace the page # for each page and save the images, easy peasy lemon squeasy.

this is actually done in your printer driver and not thru the browser/plugin, on mac os x printing to a pdf is system-wide and available anywhere you can print. Not sure about windows/linux, you may have to install a dummy pdf driver but i’ll leave that for a windows pro to answer.

Somehow the wife or I picked up a print copy of this at the NHC.  Probably at the Hopunion booth.

I run Ubuntu and it should be system-wide. I print to file webpages all the time. But this is a flash based issue I believe.

well it works in os x, are you using the print function of the browser or the one within the flash plugin?

Within the flash. I don’t have my Epson 200 hooked up…

No bigggie deal.

If you click “Powered by Issuu” at the bottom, it takes you to a page where you can register and then download the PDF.

Wow, that’s an obvious and intuitive path for your users to follow!

Yeah, I just happened to mouse over that and notice it was clickable. The whole site looks like it’s an out of the box template,s o maybe they didn’t think about a direct download option.

The book is great, though, it’s nice to see it’s been updated.

I know it’s called CUPS. Printing through the browser I only get the first two pages no matter what I set them on. I ain’t joining Issuu just to download this pdf. I’ll bookmark Denny’s link and access it there, which is just as easy as opening a file.

If you install CUPS-PDF then you can print everything to the pdf format.
If you need any help with it, let me know.

Sorry about talking off topic.

Not off topic AFAIC. Thanks for the tip I installed cups-pdf but will only print what’s displayed and not page ranges. So I have a bunch of pdf’s potentially. Any suggestions?

Really good resource Denny…I use hopunion on a regular basis.

This new booklet is even more detailed. I plan to print it for a handy go to guide.

Thanks for the tip!
