New Yeast Propagator in Huntsville AL

http://leavendary.com/

Just saw this on the local news. Is this a great country or what!

Looks like they are targeting the commercial market.

Yep. Right down the road from me but I’ll still pay the $75 over night shipment from white labs. For now. Though I am going to give them a try soon. But there have been horror stories coming out of some of the other yeast propagation start-ups. It’s scary to switch.

I was hoping you’d see this. It’s cool that the local guy is going to try a local guy.

Yes, I would like to do some test batches with some of their lager strains. But having heard of some of the bad yeast many small breweries were getting from BSI, it makes me nervous to jump ship from the tried and true.

Also, no one from the company has bothered to contact me yet.

May be you are not their target market.
Well then who it is?

I don’t think I would brew beer with Alabama yeast.  I don’t want my beer to tell me to go sit in the back of the bus.

Not cool man. Stereotyping is just ignorance and you are spewing it right now.

Agreed, Keith, one man’s humor is another man’s insult…but back to the OP - do these propigators typically sell only brewery sized pitches?  It would seem that it would be tough to start up at the homebrew level due to the packaging requirements…

Sell only brewery sized pitches: I’m not sure. I saw it on the local news and reported here.

BTW - it’s 2014. Huntsville AL is home to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the Missile Defense  Agency (“Star Wars”), and US Army Aviation and Missile Command (aka more rocket scientists than you can shake a stick at) yet we live in 1960. Cheers.

I apologize.  My dad was a mechanical engineer in the army in the late 1950s, stationed in Huntsville, and he colored my beliefs.

Understood. Big difference these days.

My parents grew up in Memphis, Tenn and the first time they saw a KKK rally was when the moved up north.

Not saying racism doesn’t exist in the south, because it does, but the majority of people find it abhorrent. Just be careful when you make assumptions about places you’ve never been.

I am often shocked by the casual racism I have witnessed here. People say crap that they don’t even think is inappropriate. I have heard my neighbors call the Asian international students “chingies” and the Sikh and Hindu “habeebs” and “a-rabs”

Every generation is getting better. My grandparents were awful.

I’m shocked when I go back to PA and hear how racist many people up there are. When I was in Denver last spring I was shocked by the lack of African Americans. At our tasting room we get a good mix of white and black. In Denver it was solidly white. Everywhere. Weird.

This is not a problem that is only in the south.  After 9-11 many types of racism came out because people thought it was ok to Hate everyone when a small fraction of a certain populace decided to commit an act of terror.  In my mind Racism because of hate is deplorable.

I recon we should move away from this topic, seeing as it is in the bylaws of the forum to not talk about race, religion or politics. I realize I have been a contributor but if we could steer away from the topic now I’d appreciate it.

BSI has been around for some time right?

How would a new outfit go about gathering guinea pigs? Even if they offer a free pitch, the amount of money invested in the other ingredients is steep.

Like any other process, I could see how it would take time to work out the kinks with a new propagation system.
