The surprise to me in that article was the top salary of $60K/year for microbiologists.  Yike!  I hope that means a BS rather than MS or PhD.  Seems very low to me.

things are a lot cheaper, including salaries, in the south east.

$60k can go way further on the east coast compared to San Diego. The fruit and veg may be as good with Florida so close.

If Alabama is comparable, there is no benefit to being close to Florida for fruits and vegetables. Total fresh F&V wasteland, from my experience.
