Oatmeal in an extract recipe?

I’d like to add 8 ozs. of instant oatmeal to a porter extract recipe, but I’m afraid the 0.5 lb lb. of 60 crystal, 0.5 lb. of chocolate malt, and 0.25 lb. of black patent malt I’m going to steep with wouldn’t have enough diastatic power to convert the starches in the oatmeal.

You’re correct. The total diastatic power adds up to just about zero. You’d need to mash with some well modified malt for sure.

If I mashed the oatmeal with 1 lb of pale ale malt, would that be enough to convert the starches in the oatmeal?
