OG readings

Novice and lurker here.

How much does temp of the wort affect the gravity reading?

I took a gravity reading of my wort yesterday before it was down to temp. Not sure exactly what temp it was at yet, but I got a 1.050 reading. I might have been around 80* or so when I measured.

Today I’d have a much more active fermentation than I expected. It’s acting more like fermentation a of worts that I’ve done in the 1.065 range.

Maybe, but you’re making a subjective guess there.  You do need to correct for temp, though.

I’m not trying to figure what it is. Just if/ how much temp variations can affect the gravity reading.

Most hydrometers are calibrated at 60°. Some are calibrated at other temperatures, so be sure to check your specific hydrometer.

1.050 at 80° is 1.052 at 60°

Nice! Thanks for the link.

Ahh this would explain why my gravity “didn’t change” when I added a whole can of purée a week later.
