Papa Nes Homebrew

I was going thru some old albums and came across one by Michael Nesmith called Tantamount To Treason. On the back was a recipe for Papa Nes Homebrew. I had never really noticed it before and was wondering if it seemed like something that is brewable.

THE PAPA NES HOME-BREW RECIPE
INGREDIENTS:
BARLEY MALT … ABOUT THREE POUNDS
WATER … ABOUT FIVE GALLONS
HOPS … ABOUT A CUP (Washington hops, if available)
CORN … TO TASTE (PILGRIMS THREW IN ARTICHOKE)
RICE … TO TASTE (It has to be processed rice)
BREWER’S YEAST … ONE BLOCK (It must be fresh and non-flocculant*)

A wee bit vague I’m thinking, but I’d go all John Alden on this one because anything with artichoke in it has to be good!

I wonder how many Washington hops were available in 1972??

I am a huge Nesmith fan!  I even have an autographed copy of Elephant Parts.  But I kinda think I’ll pass on that recipe…

Hey thanks guys. It is very vague but I thought maybe it’ll
Work out but…artichoke in my beer?

Hey, back in colonial times they’d use anything that might have some starch or sugar in it.  More “hooch” than beer you might say, but nobody had opened up a handy LHBS yet.

Who’d a thunk.

3lb of malt in 5 US gallons isn’t much - it’ll only give you around 1.2% alcohol. Even if you have 3lb of maize and 3lb of rice, it’ll get you to 4.4%.

In 1972 >95% of US hops were Cluster.

And the bulk of US beer was 4.4% and under…

And we have a club in Tampa who seem to have chosen an artichoke for their logo thinking it was a hop cone:
