Wow! 110 years is a long time. He certainly deserves recognition just for being able to live that long let alone his service to our country.
I will raise a pint in his memory.
I saw that today, and it was sad on a personal note. My wifes grandfather flew for the 94 aero squadron, the Lafayette Escadrille. He got many a Cristmas card from Captain Eddy. He passed after I met my wife, which I am thankful for.
I will definitely raise one!
Wow! I’m a little bit of a WWI buff so I find that fascinating!
He spoke French as his granparents on both side were Acadians that stopped on the way to Lousiana in the swamps in the Kankakee valley in Indiana before it was drained (good hunting and fishing back then). He signed up when he was 15 or so, and the French was what got him in. He was Capt. Eddy’s driver and interpreter at first. Then he got his airplane later when he was old enough. The first was a Newport, then he get a Spad later. He told me he liked the Newport better as it was easier to fly. My wife has a picture of him by a Newport in his flying suit.
I saw a book of picture that he had taken from WW1 . Some gruesome stuff there. Dead horses blown into trees stuff. Dismembered bodies stuff, lots of dead soldiers stuff. That picture book has been lost, which is sad for all us that wanted the history to be preserved.
I heard about this earlier today. I’ve got a pint of The Dogfather right here . . . damn.
