Random Laws of the brewday #266

266:  If the brew day has gone wicked smoothly and you are near the end…

You forgot something!

This time it was the Irish moss.  Again.  Last time I brewed this recipe I also forgot!

Maybe this beer is telling you it WANTS to be cloudy.

Try using a checklist and a mise en place (that is, set out everything you need in a specific order). I use a Brewsmith brew sheet printout and I place my ingredients out in small Pyrex cups in the order in which they will be used.

Oh believe me I do that also.  I start prepping about 6 days in advance usually.  Something about little munchkins running around gets me slightly distracted…  No, I can’t blame them either.  The truth is, even if I were 100% prepped and on the ball I would get distracted at some point!  ::slight_smile:

;D

I took this idea one step further. Using those $2.00 kitchen timers, I set a timer for every kettle edition. Best $10.00 I ever spent.  ;D

I use the timer on the microwave, but same concept. I use it for the mash, then for the boil. (Just in case I accidentally hit the wrong button and cancel the timer, I write the start time on the brewsheet.)

I have a mental block against irish moss.  Its been 40 gallons since I have remembered.  I guess Somewhere along “Good last hops are in…oh man I gotta sanitize the chiller”  I forget

I put my whirfloc right in with my last hop addition when I am weighing them out.

If you have to forget something irish moss is the least of your problems…

I forget Irish moss all the time.

I also forget the moss a lot.  A couple times I’ve actually forgotten the 0 minute hops, and those were supposed to be hoppy red ales, too!  There’s so much to remember at the end of the boil, it’s easy to leave stuff out.  I really do need to start doing the mise in place thing…that would really help.

See, now that is what I try and do.  It should have happened too as I had hop additions at 15 and 10 minutes either would have been fine.  It does not work when you have a beer with no finishing hops though…  :stuck_out_tongue:

I even measured the hops out 2 days in advance!

Microwave timer. Whirlfloc tabs in  the 15 min hop addition.

Random law of the brewday #267: You will inadvertently leave some tap or valve open at a critical point in the process.

Especially if it will pour hot wort/water into your sock/boot

…or your crotch.  (First runnings…down my leg)

You “win” for that one.

I’m not even gonna ask what your crotch was doing near the draining wort…

Check, I have done #267 the scalded foot.  Only it was hot water on my very first all grain while dumping in strike water.  A brown ale that ended up infected…

Sadly I was wearing sandals? or crocs?  maybe chuck taylors?  or some other such improper footwear!  YeeOUCH!  That was a blister!
