Sierra Nevada 30

Ok, they’re not real and out yet - that I know of, but just how badass is this whole series?

Beers brewed with: Ken Grossman, Fritz Maytag, Fred Eckhardt, Charlie P and Jack McAuliffe(?!?!?!?) in large format 750’s with proceeds to various charitable foundations as directed by the participants.

This was very, very cool to see today.

Jack McAuliffe was the first small brewer in the US to start up (typing this because I don’t know what you mean by the ?!?!?! ).  He has been out of the game for a long time.  New Albion brewing was one of the models back in the day, just like Anchor.

HOT damn…now this looks pretty swell.
Sure will be looing forward to these!

I’m well famaliar with the legacy of Jack McAuliffe. The ?!?!? was registering surprise since he seemed to go into self-imposed hermitage after New Albion collapsed. So much so where Don Barkley, his assistant brewer who went on to Mendocino and now Napa Smith, has served as the guardian of New Albion’s legacy.

The oak aged blend looks interesting.  I still have to try BigFoot.  I have my wife on a mission to find it.

Drew, now I know what you mean.

Last year he was in a very bad car accident, and you can see that when Ken Grossman was talking to him, his left arm looks to still have damage.

I look forward to trying these.  Thanks for the heads-up.

I had the pleasure of drinking Fritz and Ken’s Ale this weekend.

Fantastic.

Although collaborative brews are the style these days it seems, this celebration is definately one that I will support!

Drink up.

I am on the lookout for this series as well. I have been impressed with SN releases old and new. This one looks to be very good indeed.

Fritz & Ken’s Ale is going on tap at the Falling Rock in Denver on Friday.  Incidentally, the one weekend I am going to be out of town.

I picked up a bottle of the 30yr anniversry Stout the other day - haven’t tried it yet - looking forward to sharing it with friends in a couple of weeks. The vendor said it tasted more like a porter than a stout - I’m anxious to see just how good it is.

The wife & I had our 30th anniversary on the 12th.  We opened a SN 30th on the Santa Cruz Wharf to celebrate.  Later this year, we plan to celebrate some more when the other brews come out!

The brew was fantastic!  I would describe it as a “double porter”.

Has anyone seen a schedule or timeline of when each beer will be released?  i picked up the first one too, but it would be nice to know when to expect the others.  Sometimes things like this fly right off the shelf at my local beer store.

The ‘Fritz and Ken’s’ has made it’s way to the East Coast in recent weeks…I just picked up a few bottles in central NJ.
I’m looking forward to trying one this weekend and will probably pick up a couple more to hide away.  It will be interesting to see how this beer ages, as it seems like a good candidate for that.

There are release dates on the web page:http://www.sierra30.com/#/home

Fritz & Ken’s = Mid March 2010
Charlie Fred & Ken’s = Mid May 2010
Jack & Ken’s = Mid July 2010

Fritz and Kens Stout is a big big beer. A remarkable set of flavors. I had one set aside for next weekend, when a buddy who had also bought one offered it up last night at dinner. I’m thinking I’m going to set the one I’ve got aside for a year and see how it changes.  If this one is this good - I’m definitely on the lookout for the rest of the series. Wow.

Had a few weeks back and my thoughts on it were “damn, this is big and chewy and more than just a little meaty flavor”

I had the Fritz and Ken’s at the Taproom last week while in Chico.  Very good, with many layers of dark malty flavors.

Ken Grosman was waiting on Charlie to show up.

I was very happy with the Stout. The silky smoothness and creamy flavor were well balanced with lots of hops. It has been a long time since I tasted a stout that was as nice as this one was.

Someone else suggested it was more Porter like, but I feel it was all Stout. Black, full of chocolate and malt goodness in the aroma, with a hint of citrus hops. Solid body and If I recall correctly, somewhere north of 9% ABV makes this an Imperial Stout. Creamy and silky, with chocolate and coffee flavors, and again, more citriusy hops in the flavor.

Nice lingering bitterness. Sadly, I opend this beer the day it was available, and I felt so full that I left a portion in the bottle undrunk, as I found myself full and satisfied. Wish I had shared it with someone. I remember to do so when I open my second bottle in the future!
