I think the spam thread disappeared last night.
There are however uses for SPAM.
You’re just gonna have to fess up and admit you eat it sometimes.
I’ll post a SPAM party dip later; we don’t tell anyone what it is until they say
“Hey this is good what’s in it?”
I’m in my thirties and can say that I have never eaten Spam. That’s not to say that I wouldn’t, I just never have…That I’m aware of. Maybe someone snuck it into a dip that I was eating! :o
I haven’t eaten it either yet (that I’m aware of). When I visit friends in Hawaii I tend to prefer Portuguese sausage over Spam. The only thing I might try some day is Spam musubi.
I have never heard of anyone going into anaphalactic shock from it.
And, no one has puked or stopped eating it after finding out either.
I don’t serve anything I wouldn’t eat myself.
Is “SUSHI STATION” nationwide? It’s this crazy place that does regular sushi on a conveyor belt, but they also have hot dog sushi, cheeseburger sushi, and other crazy things that aren’t actually sushi. Spam isn’t one of em tho.
Not in my household. In eighth grade, family took a six week cross country camping trip - SPAM way too often. Haven’t touched the stuff to this day (and eighth grade for me was 1973).
I had some folks over to my apartment in college for a party. Late, late into the night (copious consumption had occurred) someone brought over some nacho cheese dip. We were all gobbling it up. Somebody asked for the recipe from the guy who brought it over. A pound of raw ground beef pureed into melted velveeta and salsa!
Considering I had been a vegetarian for 8 years at that point I was a bit perturbed to say the least. NEVER heard of putting meat, let alone raw meat into cheese dip. The guy knew I was vegetarian too. Man I had the shits for days as my body was not used to processing meat.
So, it isn’t really cool to hide a foodstuff in something and not let folks know. Everyone has the right to decide what they put in their own body.
Did you ask before you ate? You think it was malicious? Then I would agree - not cool.
I don’t hang with vegetarians, not that they’re bad people, there just aren’t many vegetarians in the Midwest; and I was SOBER when I made my dip. Nothing is/was hidden - just nobody asked. I make Queso Fundido con Chorizo too and don’t tell you it’s Chorizo unless you ask.
Ask for my special lobster-peanut-cheese and pork sauce - it’s AMAZING!
With the amount of spices I throw into some of my dishes, particularly southern asian ones, I probably couldn’t tell you whats in it if you asked!
But good god, raw hamburger and velveeta and salsa? I think you’d find many meat eaters equally disgusted!!! It’s not even couched in trappings of fanciness, like steak tartare…velveeta and raw meat? It just sounds like some idiot who a. had not done any cooking in his life and b. was either really drunk or really idiotic.
Generally I would say the burden is on the guest to announce any things they cannot eat. If I know someone is a Muslim or a vegan, I won’t serve pork, or animal products respectively, but I don’t have guests fill out a form listing religious or allergic incompatibilities with foods upon arrival. If you are a vegetarian, let your host know so they can cater to you. If they still feed you meat then they are bastards, as appears to be the case with the raw beef Rotel-dip. Likewise if you can only eat halal or kashrut meat, or are allergic to peanuts. It is important to let the host know…until then, the burden is on you, after that, the burden is on them.
I don’t announce a list of ingredients so I see no problem in not announcing to everyone that a dip contains spam unless there was reason to believe people had religious or health reasons to avoid eating spam.
Weaze should try using spam in place of klobasa in his slow cooked sweet and sour cocktail and cranberry sauce dish. Spam does go really well with velveta cheese and clams.
Funny you should say that. I was living in the midwest at the time.
Yeah I learned my lesson there. It never dawned on me that cheese dip could be unsafe to eat. I was pretty naive. Living in the midwest (and some experience in the south) taught me that to some folks meat is a seasoning not just a food group. :
Anyway, regardless, this thread is a about that glorious foodstuff, that wonder of slaughterhouse by products, with the oh so lovely unidentified jelly substance on top… SPAM
I must admit, Spam is pretty cool. ;D
Would I knowingly eat it? Hell no. Would I worship at it’s alter? Hell yeah?! ??? :-*
I am glad I do not live in Austin Minn. though. Drove through there numerous times. The stench was pretty unbearable. Sadly, I never made it to the Spam Museum.
