Starter with water

Everybody says starter should be like a small wort made with dme nutrients and so , but randy mosher says in mastering homebrew to avoid using dme , just water , is he alright? I mean what could possibly happen if i just add yeast to the water , stir and then add it to the wort?

I think you are misreading.

If you are using dry yeast you don’t need or want to make a starter because the yeast are packaged with sufficient reserves to get going and making a starter will only results in them depleting these reserves.

Rehydrating the dry yeast in plain, boiled and cooled water will help cushion the yeast a but so they are not as stressed when introducing them to the wort.

you are correct that you will not increase your yeast count using only water.

Morticaixavier, thank you , but how about a vial?

If you mix liquid yeast from a vial or pouch (or any other container) with water you will also have the same number of yeast but in a larger volume of liquid.

Thank you guys, appreciate it

You need DME to feed the yeast, otherwise there will be no cell growth. No DME=no starter

Got it , thanks cheers

Otoh you can use water a a sea monkey starter.

Lol but then i would get a sea monkey hangover that d be a problem

Just wanted to say I re read mosher and morticaixavier was right I misread thank you all
