I have a 10 gallon corny. Unlike my other kegs, the gas and liquid sides have different threads. And there’s no other indication of which side is which. I can see someone who didn’t know that just bearing down and wondering why the post won’t go on.
You wasted $25 bucks. The threads are galled. This is a typical occurrence for stainless steel if not handled properly. You can file it as one brewer suggested, or you can tap it again as another brewer suggested. But the bottom line is the threads are cashed and will never be as strong as they were intended to be.
And now you know why a $325 item was going for $25. Scrap value on ~18 lbs of SS is probably $4-5, so you can recoup a bit. Just not like the cagy seller.
I would try cleaning the threads up as suggested. The required clamp load is not that high, there are a couple of undamaged threads that will support that load.
I knew it was messed up when I bought it. The seller was completely up-front. I went in with the assumption that if I couldn’t fix the threads, maybe try welding a new adapter on it if feasible vs using it as a fermenter if I cant.
I disagree. The top thread is the only one boogered up (probably caused by someone trying to put the wrong fitting on). Straighten that up and she’ll work like new.
And the winner is… Robert!
The keg was a Challenger VI, and when I found the right out QD, it fit like a glove. Holds pressure just fine. Thanks, I owe you a beer!
