Tell me what you think

I’ve been working with a guy on Outsource.com to develop a logo for the possible brewery I may start when I retire in a few years.  Here is his nearly final effort:

I’ve incorporated and trademarked the name.  All the cheap stuff…

I really like it. And Anchor will sue you.

They can buy me out for a cool million.

Awesome! When you are ridiculously rich I’ll guard your money for you.

I think it looks nice. I can’t wait to see it in color.

Looks great! Old school, hand drawn?! I love it!

Looks really sharp.

Looks awesome. As a Navy vet I am inclined to ask for a discount when production begins.

As a fellow Navy vet, I’ll bet you’d drink for free

But, I don’t think I’ll be able to get going with it till I retire (7-8 years) so that I don’t have to worry about income.

Make sure to hire enough strong, young backs.

That could actually be a legit concern. Shipyard as well, though Anchor would be your bigger problem because of location. I’d research the font and overall shape too - I remember seeing the logo shape before but can’t remember where. It’s a fairly generic shape though.

It would be a 300 dollar question, but I’d take a bunch of competitor examples to a lawyer specializing in trademarks/copyrights and see what he says.

Yeah, that is my next step.  I have the name trademarked, and I don’t see how someone could trademark an anchor.  It would have to be identical in every respect.

Depends. From what I hear, Anchor has been successfully defending their anchor for years and years.

If the anchor is the main concern, have you considered maybe some other symbol? Like a ship’s wheel or a compass?

Just a passing thought.

Belay that BS!  ;D    (The old man on my ship’s favorite expression when some junior officer gave a less than stellar order while standing conn).

Am I going to have to request permission to come aboard?  Are you going to blast music from the 1MC? Are you going to have a gedunk store?  Am I going to have to stand before the mast if I say something bad about your beer?

IANAL - but it seems like the standard used for these things is if the image is close enough to confuse the average (i.e. not so bright) person then it is an infringement.

My first thought when I looked at the logo was “Anchor Steam may have an issue with that” and I don’t live in a place where their beers are even sold.  That doesn’t really mean anything though, I’m a worrier by nature.  “Every silver lining has a tough of gray” seemed like a so obviously true statement that there was no need to write it down.  ::slight_smile:

Ha!  I wish I were better at funny responses.  So the answers are: yes, yes, and maybe.  The only certain thing is if you come in with your cover on and hear the ship’s bell ring, you buy everyone a round!

Dang, Mark.

It’s been decades since I heard the term 1MC. And quite a while since hearing gedunk.

I don’t know if this brings back fond memories or nightmares.

I received my DD 214 over thirty years ago, but there are things that one just does not forget.
