Thermometer Probe Repair Question

In a moment of carelessness, I melted the lead to my digital thermometer probe.  The wires are tiny, but I was able to do what I thought was a good job of splicing them back together.  It doesn’t seem to have worked, though.  The readout is 50 F with the probe in ice water.  Does anybody have any experience with this or any knowledge of the workings of digital thermometer probes?  Is there perhaps some dependency on the total resistance of the lead or something else which might be affected by the splice?

Toss it in bin #13 & buy a new one.
