I sure love mine.  More in the kitchen, than the brewery, but this is one cool device.

Damn that is a great price! If I already didn’t have one this would be an excellent opportunity to buy!

Great price might have something to do with the fact that they could be “reconditioned”

Yep.  That and a damaged package.  I personally would rather save the money from new though.  I buy reconditioned electronics all the time.  So far, never had a problem.  But ya never know.  I guess it’s bound to happen soooner or later.

That is a great price, as long as they work properly.  I love my Thermapen.  I have one that is dedicated for brewing and one for cooking.  I gave one to my brother for Christmas this year too.  I guess I’m sort of a Thermapen junkie!

I bought one of these open-box/refurbished Thermapens last July. It’s warrantied as if new and works just the same.

I’ve had good luck buying other factory reconditioned electronics. As long as its still warrantied then you probably shouldn’t worry.

OK, now even I’m going to buy one!

I knew this day would come.

+1

For that price I might buy a second one for the kitchen.

I bought one for more, don’t regret it a bit.

I figured instead of starting a new thread. For all those interested.

I bought mine open box sale maybe about 2 years ago. its working great and still on same batteries.  I use it for everything.  A little sticky in the hinge because i dipped it in the mash but that was me not paying attention.

thanks for the new link.  i just ordered a pink one to go along wiht my yellow one.

Just keep rinsing the hinge area and work it back and forth every time you use it. Soon the stickiness will be gone provided you don’t dip too deep again…

This is the key. It started moving ok after rinsing and opening and closing the first time I did it. Hopefully the third time will not be when I discover the difference between splashproof and waterproof.

are these really worth the price?  How fast does it read temps?  I bought a waterproof digital thermometer from a kitchen supply store for $15.

I’d say 2-3 seconds.

2 seconds max.

Thanks for posting. I already have one but many club members have asked about it. I reposted the link on our club group and have already heard from three people who have bought one.

Mine arrived a few days ago.

Box said open box in a sticker, but I could find no other evidence of it being used.

Locks temp in just 2 seconds. But what I really found neat is that it only reads the temp in the first 1/16th of an inch of the tip. Probing a chicken cutlet you could see the temp gradations while it cooked.

Overkill… Yes. Really cool… Absolutely!

I have been going through the 10-15 dollar units every year or so. Feels like this has longevity. We’ll see. Also the cheap ones often come miscallibrated by a few degrees. I checked this one against boiling water and ice bath and it was spot on.  Impressive!

I just got mine a few days ago as well.  Checked the cal and it was right on the button.  I’m looking forward to seeing what the differences are between the pen and the brewmometers I have.
