Yep. That and a damaged package. I personally would rather save the money from new though. I buy reconditioned electronics all the time. So far, never had a problem. But ya never know. I guess it’s bound to happen soooner or later.
That is a great price, as long as they work properly. I love my Thermapen. I have one that is dedicated for brewing and one for cooking. I gave one to my brother for Christmas this year too. I guess I’m sort of a Thermapen junkie!
I bought mine open box sale maybe about 2 years ago. its working great and still on same batteries. I use it for everything. A little sticky in the hinge because i dipped it in the mash but that was me not paying attention.
Just keep rinsing the hinge area and work it back and forth every time you use it. Soon the stickiness will be gone provided you don’t dip too deep again…
This is the key. It started moving ok after rinsing and opening and closing the first time I did it. Hopefully the third time will not be when I discover the difference between splashproof and waterproof.
Thanks for posting. I already have one but many club members have asked about it. I reposted the link on our club group and have already heard from three people who have bought one.
Box said open box in a sticker, but I could find no other evidence of it being used.
Locks temp in just 2 seconds. But what I really found neat is that it only reads the temp in the first 1/16th of an inch of the tip. Probing a chicken cutlet you could see the temp gradations while it cooked.
Overkill… Yes. Really cool… Absolutely!
I have been going through the 10-15 dollar units every year or so. Feels like this has longevity. We’ll see. Also the cheap ones often come miscallibrated by a few degrees. I checked this one against boiling water and ice bath and it was spot on. Impressive!
I just got mine a few days ago as well. Checked the cal and it was right on the button. I’m looking forward to seeing what the differences are between the pen and the brewmometers I have.
