Forgot wirlfloc and nutrient again. Ain’t going to happen a third time.
;D
Sure, that works now, but what about in the summer when that door is open? ;D
DOH!
That’s funny, Jim and Tom!
You should tatoo it on the back of your hand. ;D
I have a written check list, just like a pilot. It’s too bad I don’t check it :-[
+1 - I always print out my recipe and jot notes on it before/while brewing. But then I forget something. Usually it’s the whirlfloc and nutrients because I have pretty much stopped doing middle hop additions. Now I set two timers. My stove is set for the full boil length and my microwave is the time until the next addition.
I use Beersmith’s alarms to remind me. Now that you have a tablet Jim, it may be worth a look.
Having said that, the one thing I have not been able to get Beersmith to do is have an alarm 15 minutes from the end of the mash to relight the HLT for the sparge water. So I tell Siri to remind me at a specific time.
Garage door= giant dry-erase board? Hmmm…
I use Beer Timer for Android. It looks like there’s an iPhone version as well. I LOVE that app.

You can always go with one of the timer apps for your smart phone or computer. There’s a really cool brewing timer that I have on my computer, but can’t remember the name of it at the moment. I’ll post back later with it if you would like.
I always put some hops in at the 15 minute mark and then I won’t forget to put the irish moss in.
they go in at the same time as my chiller.
on timers. I have a clock on my cell phone, it has an alarm function with labels. so I can either set up the whole brew day in there or more often I will set the alarm and then reset it each time it goes off. this way I can account for loss of boil when the chiller goes in, the propane runs out, or I decide I’m just too busy to drain the mash tun right this second.
+1. IC, whirlfloc, and yeast nutrient all go in @ 10 minutes left. I use my cell phone timer as well.
i take my chances. then when i taste the finished product i try to guess which steps i forgot 8)
it’s a fun new game!
I have several digital ways to time things from stop watches to brew software, but the old fashioned wind timer is the most convenient. I’ve tested accuracy and it goes off within seconds of the digital. But I’m pretty sure I won’t forget whirlfloc and nutrient again.
Two weeks ago at flameout I remembered that I had forgotten to add whirfloc and Wyeast nutrient. Luckily, I was doing a 45-minute hop stand without additional pre-cooling of the wort, so I just added them at flameout, and as per my hop stand procedure, stirred every few minutes. There was plenty of time for them to incorporate and be pasteurized/sterilized.
I kegged/started the dry-hop last night and the beer tasted great, and had no problem fermenting.
Dude. I’m sure your beer will be just fine. In fact from now on I’ll eschew these irritating little additions and encourage you to do the same. I just don’t think they do that much.
