What to do with post boil hops?

After the boil is over are the hops (I use pellets) usable for anything? Good as plant fertilizer?

They are toxic to dogs so I say dispose of them. A few ounces less mulch isn’t going to destroy the planet

I use pellet hops in mesh bags. When I’m finished, I empty the bags into the trash.

+1 to Jim, I just toss them in the trash, pellet of whole, they’re garbage when they’re done:)

I dump trub and hops in my compost bin. I don’t have dogs though.

I put it in the compost which is enclosed so no problem for the dog.

All of my spent grain and hops go into the compost as well.

+1.  The possibility of my dogs, or someones wandering dog, getting into the compost pile and eating a bunch of wort sweet hops makes me send them to the trash.

+2

For me, it depends.  Certain varieties of hops that I know my wife doesn’t like go into the trash.  Others go into the compost, but our bin is completely enclosed and no dogs around it.

I didn’t quite get the decision making process. Are you punishing the hops your wife doesn’t like?  ???

I have two dogs. Are they that toxic to them? Is it like chocolate were they can’t break down certain compounds and then it builds up over time or just instantly bad. Also, besides just being organic matter, is it extra awesome as a plant nutrient or just like other stuff that goes in compost/mixed in with potting soil?

Very bad. Like same day death is possible. They overheat.

I was wondering the same thing.  Your wife can differentiate composted hops? Impressive.

Pretty simple.  My wife usually deals with the compost bin while I’m dealing with cleanup.  So, at the point of mixing in the new compost material, she’s going to be the one to smell it.

lol nope, but she can certainly differentiate the hop aromas she likes or doesn’t like straight out of the boil.

That’s some sophisticated Teamwork! Nice.

That’s still pretty impressive!

Compost or trash. Depends on whether it is whole hops and if a lot were used. More hops increases the likelihood of the compost bin and if I use grain that also gets composted.

I use hop bags so it’s easy to dump hops out.

On which occasions would you use hops and not use grain?

Yeah, spent grain here almost always gets composted.  The occasions where it doesn’t it either gets turned into bread or dog treats.

Ah. I don’t eschew the use of malt extract.
